Electricity is an integral part of the modern world.
So it makes sense that when we’re dealing with the energy of the future, the electrical industry is at the forefront of the debate.
In the UK, there are currently about 500 companies producing battery-powered mobile phones.
That’s an industry worth £9bn a year, with a market share of more than 30%.
The battery-driven phone has been in the news in recent months as part of a wider debate about the future of electricity.
But it’s also a topic that comes up in discussions with electricians.
The issue of the safety of the batteries being used in the batteries of the devices is one of the main concerns, said Barry Luscombe, a research fellow at the University of Bristol.
“The battery is an electrical component and so it is one that can potentially cause some sort of problem with the electronics in the battery,” he said.
“That could be something that is not immediately obvious but could become obvious if it was not handled properly.”
So how safe is it to use batteries in a smartphone?
In a previous report for the Royal Society of Chemistry, Professor Luscastle said that using battery-operated devices was an acceptable way to use electricity.
“You can be sure that there will be some degree of safety in any system that has batteries,” he explained.
“Battery technology has been around for more than 100 years and has undergone many technological changes over time, and so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect battery technology to improve as it becomes more widely available.”
But Professor Luscam says that battery-controlled devices have a few problems.
“We’re starting to see more battery-based products in use, but there are still a number of things to consider, including the type of device being used, the distance between the device and the battery, and the overall size of the battery itself,” he added.
He said it was difficult to estimate how safe a battery-activated device would be, but said the devices needed to be reliable, not too small and not too heavy.
The batteries used to power mobile phones in the US have a capacity of up to 250Wh, but that’s not the only technology that can be used.
There are also lithium ion batteries that can deliver up to 1,000Wh per battery charge.
The size of these batteries has also changed.
Today, a typical lithium ion battery is a little over three centimetres (1/4 inch) thick, while a conventional battery is only a quarter of an inch (3/8 inch).
“In recent years, battery technologies have grown in size and complexity, so it’s become increasingly difficult to predict how safe an individual battery cell or battery-equipped phone will be,” Professor Lusscombe said.
“But for devices such as smartphones, which are often small and light, the current size of batteries can be more than sufficient to ensure that the devices themselves are safe.”
To put things into perspective, a modern-day smartphone is roughly 1.5cm (0.5 inch) in length.
So a standard lithium ion device, which can deliver a maximum of 250Wh per charge, is 1.75cm (1.2 inch) long.
Professor Lusbourne said that batteries were a relatively new technology and not fully understood.
“They’re still a very young technology,” he told the BBC.
“It’s still quite a big area of research and we still have some work to do.”
If you can get a phone that’s battery-free and safe, then you’re in good company.
“Electricity in mobile phones is often carried on a cable, which is usually attached to a battery or a USB socket.
Professor Celine Rizzoli, a lecturer in electrical engineering at the Royal College of Engineering, said that these devices have some advantages over battery-less phones.”
With a battery you can connect to the power grid and it’s very simple to maintain power in the home, so you can still use it,” she said.
But she also said that the cable could lead to issues with the safety or reliability of the phone.”
In terms of safety, it’s a lot easier to connect a battery than to connect to a USB cable, and therefore you can carry the battery around with you for a long time without getting an issue with the device,” she added.
Electricity is also more expensive than batteries.
Professor Rizzol said that in a typical phone, the cost of the cable to power the device is between £5 and £20.
But that could change in the future.”
You could get batteries with longer cables and you could even get batteries that are more expensive and you would have a longer battery cable that you could use to recharge the phone,” she explained.
She said the best way to ensure safety is to ensure the battery-linked device is powered by reliable batteries.”
